Making the Bed & Cleaning Secrets from a 5-Star Luxury Hotel Housekeeper

I recently went on a YouTube search for bed-making tips from the people who do it all the time and are the best at it in the field: luxury housekeepers.

In my search I found this gem featuring 5 pro bed-making and cleaning tips from Constance Chapalain, Assistant Housekeeping Manager at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, France -- a bona fide 5-star luxury hotel!:

The video is presented in the luxurious French language and subtitled throughout, so it’s easy to watch and read sans sound if preferred; it’s also enjoyable to watch with the volume on, to hear (and learn) the French language.

All the tips are top-notch and demonstrate what luxury housekeeping is all about -- meticulous attention to detail.

Each tip below includes a direct link to the time stamp on the video where that tip starts.

1. Meticulously Made Bed @ :32 seconds

The secret: hospital corners are what give any bed a touch of meticulous luxury. I never used to do hospital corners because I didn’t really know what they were or how to do them, but after I was shown how to do them efficiently as a luxury housekeeper I started doing them at home, too. The technique in this video is what I know hospital corners to be and it's how I add a little bit of luxury to my home every day when I make the bed.

2. Easily Place the Duvet in the Duvet Cover @ 1:00 minute

The secret: match up the corners of the duvet to the corners of the duvet cover and pull through for efficient duvet-covering. This is the optimal way to get a duvet/down comforter into its cover, and it’s how I do it when a duvet is being used. Having two people helps, of course, but it is manageable with one person by matching up the corners as shown and having ample room to work with the duvet.

3. Meticulously Made Pillow @ 1:45

The secret: fold the pillow in half lengthwise to easily fit into pillow case, fluff pillow into place, and tuck in pillow case ends for the look of luxury at home. Tucking in pillow case ends is a must for the look of luxury(!) and is part of my daily bed-making routine. Folding the pillow in half lengthwise does help, and I hadn’t heard of doing that until watching this video; it takes some getting used to, but it’s a nicer technique than just shoving the pillow in the case.

4. Clean a Mirror @ 2:20

The secret: use a microfiber cloth with water to wipe away spots, then use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe the mirror. The housekeeping secret is that cleaning solutions aren’t needed to remove spots on mirrors; all that is needed is water and a good microfiber cloth, as is shown in the video. It takes one minute or less to wipe away wet spots on the mirror with a dry microfiber cloth; I clean the bathroom mirror every day (sometimes more than once) and it’s done in no time. Simply keep a pile of microfiber cloths on hand in the bathroom to make cleaning go quicker.

5. Get Rid of Calcium Deposits @ 2:48

The secret: use vinegar on sink/tub fixtures to remove built-up mineral deposits. This is the easiest way to remove those awful-looking hard water stains without having to scrub or use elbow grease. All that is needed is a clean cloth and some vinegar:

Vinegar Soak How To for Cleaning Hard Water Stains Mineral & Calcium Deposits on Kitchen Sink Fixtures

Here is the before and after from when I did a 24-hour vinegar soak on a kitchen sink fixture that hadn’t been cared for in an embarrassingly long time; it’s easy to ‘see’ stains like this every day and not really see them, or to see them and think there’s nothing that can be done so why bother, when a little vinegar and time are all it takes to remove the ugliest and oldest of hard water stains:

It actually took less time to clean the sink fixture with a 24-hour vinegar soak than the few years spent looking at the stains without consciously noticing just how awful it looked. Now, since the fixtures have been cleaned so thoroughly, I pay better attention each week when I scrub the sink to make sure they stay shiny; and it is easy to keep them shiny with a regular weekly cleaning routine.

That's another housekeeping pro tip of my own that I learned on the job: Always have a regular cleaning routine in place. Following a regular cleaning routine ensures that every day, week, and month, all the important cleaning tasks get done when they need to be done; so that a home is clean, orderly, hygienic, and happy all year long.

After watching the YouTube video from the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, France, I was inspired to create something with a French theme that would help people with their own housekeeping and homemaking endeavors -- and voila!

The Problem With TCM's Closed Captions and How To Fix It (For DISH Customers!)

Captioning Service 1 is the DISH default; switching it to 0 (zero) works with TCM captions. I don't want my MTV any more, but I do want my captions, especially on TCM where old movies are full of fuzzy sounds, funny accents, and mumbling voices -- and thanks be to the stenographers who make it possible! However, the past few months TCM's captions have not been as consistent and it made me question if they stopped captions altogether since all the other channels still had captions. The good news is TCM didn't do away with captions, but the Captioning Service setting did change without any word given to DISH customers or TCM viewers, at least not to this one. Scroll to the end to read the solution for DISH customers, or keep reading for my rhetorical digression: Gee, if only there was a way to inform paying customers of changes like this? For all the useless information TCM hosts spew, they could at least give some useful information since their captions are th

How I’m Saving Over $700 a Year by Shopping at Costco (Blue Collar Home Economics for Beginners)

Q: What’s the best way to save money when shopping at Costco? A: Buy items that are used every day! The more an item is used, the more that item is needed; therefore, if the most used items in a house are bought in bulk (at Costco or any warehouse club store), the more money it will save. I did a cost analysis on three food items that are used 5 to 7 days a week in my home and I was amazed at the findings when I compared the cost for the items in bulk to purchasing the items in smaller quantities; namely lunch cheese, coffee, and lunch meat. Please keep in mind that prices can vary by location and if there are weekly specials; the information I’m presenting is based on the prices listed on my receipts where I live, the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Lunch Cheese: In December of 2019 we started purchasing the 2.5lb block of Tillamook Pepper Jack Cheese at Costco for my husband’s lunches that he has five days a week, instead of the 7.5oz packages of sliced Sargento

Kinky Kicks, Disgraceful Dames, & Hollywood Hypocrisy! My 10-star Movie Review of 'Smarty' from 1934

My 10-star review on IMDb.com of ‘Smarty’ from 1934 , starring Joan Blondell, Warren William, Edward Everett Horton, Frank McHugh, and Claire Dodd:  Kinky Kicks, Disgraceful Dames, & Hollywood Hypocrisy! Marriage and divorce lawyers take a bigger beating in this movie than Joan Blondell does, and if a single slap on the face equates to domestic violence then people don't know what domestic violence really is! There is more violence against women in modern movies than there is in this film, yet people are now programmed to believe that it's acceptable for women to get beaten so long as it isn't by their husbands! Please, go sit through 'True Romance' and watch Patricia Arquette take a bloody beating from James Gandolfini if you think 'Smarty' is violence against women. Even 'Goodfellas' has more marital violence, yet both AMC & IFC can't stop showing it which tells me that reckless violence against women is the status quo per th
